There is help out there limiting these little pesky buggers. There are many programs that can prevent the ads from popping up and getting in the way. They are called "Pop-up Blockers" and they work very well. They will block any new window that pops up while on the Internet. They work on Macs and PCs.

Though there are many times when pop-up boxes can be very annoying, many times there are pop-up boxes that are supposed to pop-up when you are visiting a site. If there is a pop-up blocker installed, the next box will not materialize leaving the surfer puzzled as to what is happening.
To help this situation, many of the blockers have on-off buttons that can be selected to turn off the blocking function. Or the window will be displayed in a corner out of the way to reveal the window that was blocked. It puts you in control of what you want and do not want to see. There are many more features that will customize the blocker to suite your needs. There are many pop-up blockers out there such as StopZilla, Popup Cop, Guard- IE and many more. Do a search in Yahoo under Pop-up blocker. They range anywhere from free to $30.00. There are more features and capabilities when the programs are purchased.

This issue is for backup and just one form of backup. There are many forms of backup storage. However there is one form that is inexpensive and very easy to perform and is most likely on your computer right now. That is your CD-RW drive (Compact Disk - Re- Writable). If you have not backed up your documents folder, photos, financial data or your client base, do it now. It is very easy to do. Every computer that has a CD-RW software package that came with the drive. If you do not know where it is, you may want to ask your kids about it. They may burn CD music on the drive. Or if you have Microsoft Windows XP, it automatically comes with the drag-and-drop file-burning feature. There are two common CD-RW burning programs, Roxio Easy CD Creator and Nero CD Rom burner. They are both easy to use and both have a wizard to help you through.

The items to back up most are Quicken, Quickbooks, Act data, Email address book and the "My Documents" folder.

I have seen many people loose data that could not be simply put back again. So make it a priority to do it this week. If there are any questions please call me so I can help you out.

Syncing up to Microsoft Word documents, it
is a snap to take notes with a client. With the Excel
spread sheet program there is no more forgetting to
document mileage in a book in your car. It is kept in
your Palm and then downloaded into your Document
folder.

With the new ACTLink software it is a snap to sync it up to your ACT Client database software. There will never be a missed appointment due to that my palm V always reminds me of an appointment well before it happens.
For those who have not got the Graffiti down, there is a keyboard that is very handy. For about $100.00 this compact fold-out accessory is wonderful if there are notes to take and the hunt and tap will not do. At about the size of two cigarette packs, when folded, this sleek ad-on opens up to a keyboard that is about the size of a full keyboard complete with function keys. . Setup is simple: just load the keyboard.prc file into your Palm Install Tool and perform a HotSync. Once you plug the Palm V into the socket at the top of the keyboard and launch the software, your PDA will recognize anything you type. (Palm also offers nearly identical keyboards for its III and VII series handhelds.) With all the new products for the PDA's out there it will be difficult to know which one is right for you. The best thing to do is look at them in person at your nearest Fry's, Best Buy or Circuit City. I know they have made my life much easier and they will make your life easy also. Good Luck and happy computing.

Is networking in your future? con't...

The second reason is that anyone can print to a printer from any computer in the house or office. With routers that have a built-in print server, the printer is connected to the router instead of another computer. How many times have you sent a print job to the printer and found that nothing printed out because the computer that the printer is connected to was off. This way the print server is always on and will always accept your print job. Third reason is sharing files. How many times have you worked all day on a report and had to save it onto a floppy to take it to another computer? Or how many times have you had to move a large file to another computer and it was too big for a floppy? Networking gets rid of all this cumbersome problem.

Fourth reason is for data storage and back up is much easier. If everyone in your office is saving files that are important enough to back up, then everyone will have to back up their own files. That is a nightmare to keep track of and administer. However if all files were on one computer and everyone is saving data to one general area on the file server, back up would be much easier and efficient. Makes sense?
So the moral of the story is to find a way to network those computers together and make you office much more efficient and easier to use. Next time we will discuss wired vs wireless networking.

Tech Tip Corner

This will apply to all versions of Windows. Click on the Start button and then select run. Type in this word: "command" A black screen will come up. This is called a DOS Shell or DOS Window. Type in "ping www.yahoo.com" without the "". You should see "Reply from 66.218.71.87: bytes=32 time=146ms TTL=53" This tells the computer to go out and see if it can see the website www.yahoo.com. You can replace any website in the place of www.yahoo.com

If you do not see any responce there is something wrong. Try powering down the computer, unplugging the cable box and router, if you have one, for two minutes and then plugging it back in. This will reset itself and you should be on your way again. If that does not do it, refer to tech support for help.
